Everquest 2 Sentinel’s Fate

Today EQ2’s latest expansion Sentinel’s Fate launched and with some hesitation (I’ve been feeling pretty burned on the game for a long time now) I picked it up. Tonight being back in the game gave me a great reminder of the real strength of the game – depth. When I logged in I had to spend about 30 minutes getting my AA (talents) in order and at first it was annoying (COME ON LET ME GET TO THE ACTION!) but it quickly turned in to an interesting exercise in relearning my class as I used the in game browser to switch between guides and forums to read up on various talent trees, etc.
The real depth-strength shinned clear when it came time to the action. I started heading to the new zone to start some solo questing but before I managed to take a single quest someone called out “anyone want to join a group in The Hole?”. I figured what the hell – let’s do it. The Hole is an open world dungeon (i.e. not instanced) and it became a quick reminder of how much fun it is to explore these big huge open ended dungeons.
The highlight of the night was when we wiped one of the uber guilds on the server (sorry Defiance) – they were *cough* exploiting a broken ring event and we *cough* accidentally advanced the ring event and popped the boss – which we learned was a giant cyclops raid mob intended for 4 level end game groups. We were all wiped off the face of the planet in seconds…
Things like open dungeons are what is missing from the modern MMO and tonight was a good sign that I might have found something I’ve been missing in EQ2. I’m still tentative but I have a lot more confidence in what I’ll get out of the game now then what I did yesterday…
